HISTORY

Hope Lutheran Church, Cranberry was formally organized
on October 15, 1916. A charter was drafted with 44
signatures. In the spring of 1917, on ground donated by
Thomas Craft, work on a new church began.

The history of this congregation from the time of its
founding until 1958 may be found in the volume titled
Pittsburgh Synod Congregational Histories, which was
edited by Dr. Ernest G. Heissenbuttel and published
in 1959.

The full-time pastor was the
Rev. Philip Harcourt, who began
his ministry at Hope in 1962.

Growth of the Cranberry area was
already occurring as a result of the
Pennsylvania Turnpike and
Interstate 79 intersection with
Route 19, and Hope Lutheran
saw growth in their membership
and the building facilities became
inadequate.

As a result, the current church site
on Rowan Road was purchased from
the Graham Estate. The church celebrated
groundbreading in August 1971 and dedicated
the new building to the Glory of God on May 28, 1972.

As part of the 70th anniversary celebration, a bell that
hung at the Franklin Road Church since June 1920 was moved to the current location.

The year 1995 saw a planned expansion of ministry and facilities to serve the fast-growing Cranberry Township with a strong vital Lutheran church. An addition to the current building was completed May 8, 1998, and a new addition was dedicated February 14, 1999.
